Anyone who’s seen these larrikins live before will know that they put on a pretty convincing show, and have a good time on stage while they are at it. Which, was perfect for a room full of antipodeans looking for a trip down memory lane.

Not to say that their latest official release isnt as good as their old stuff (yes, thats an injoke…) in fact, Regurgitator have a nack of suprising everyone with something fresh and rocking with every new album. Indeed, they opened with one of their tracks of the new album, and it kicked the night off nicely.

I first time I saw these guys was around 14 years ago, at the Perth Big Day Out, with Quan wearing a rather becoming pink frock, and thrashing out classics like Blubber Boy and Track 1… (since then he’s denounced the dress wearing, stating that he was put off them after seeing a band he didn’t like very much wearing similar fair.)

They may have grown up abit since then, lost a drummer, and adopted a keyboard player, but they played a cracking set of 22 tracks to round off the end of the UK tour, using their experience to rile up the crowd to their own advantage. Within a few tracks into the set, the audience were busy moshing around and shouting out lyrics to their favourites. Quan and Ben still work amazingly together, and have a great energy on stage.

I certainly enjoyed this concert,but I wish they’d played blubber boy… can’t win them all I suppose!

Heres a few tracks from the night:

Paul Kelly - Scala, 14 August, 2008

I went to this gig with my gf and a few aussie mates, and as expected, it felt like half of the australians in London had turned up to watch Paul Kelly in action. Holly Throsby warmed the crowd up nice with some charming songs, and everyone was eagerly waiting Paul’s performance.

Paul walked on stage, followed by his nephew Dan Kelly, and immediately set the intensity of the set by opening with ‘They Thought I Was Asleep’, which, had the audience silently listening to his candid lyrics and haunting harmonica solo.

While I initially thought his set would consist mostly of tracks from his latest album Stolen Apples, but as the old hits kept coming, it became obvious he was going to make a show of it - and what a set it was - 90 minutes solid, and 25 tracks in total.

Whether it was a family thing or just testiment to how superb they both were was musicians, Dan and Paul’s voices blended incredibly well, and their playing seemed to almost be as if only 1 person was on stage. Just the level of understanding between the two, and how they anticipate each others playing, really enhanced an already amazing set.

Just about every hit you can think of was played, with exception of ‘From Little Things, Big Things Grow’ (which leaves something to look forward to next time!)… It was almost as if Paul was doing a northern hemisphere version of his Australian A-Z shows.

The crescendo for me was not the ending encore of ‘When I First Met Your Ma’, or the acoustic simplicity of ‘Sweet Guy’, but ‘How To Make Gravy’, which appeared significantly before the end - almost like Paul was unknowingly trying for his own Golden Ratio in his set. (no, it doesnt work out, I tried it :)

I had a little trouble trying to choose tracks for you to get, as it all sounded so damn good… so the preview ends up being just under half the gig: (yes, it was that good - easily the best gig of the year so far!)
