Grace
Cowritten by Jeff Buckley/Gary Lucas
Unreleased
Lyrics:
There's the moon asking to stay
Long enough for the clouds to fly me away
Well it's my time coming, i'm not afraid to die
My fading voice sings of love,
But she cries to the clicking of time
Of time

Wait in the fire...

And she weeps on my arm
Walking to the bright lights in sorrow
Oh drink a bit of wine we both might go tomorrow
Oh my love
And the rain is falling and i believe
My time has come
It reminds me of the pain
I might leave
Leave behind

Wait in the fire...

And I feel them drown my name
So easy to know and forget with this kiss
I'm not afraid to go but it goes so slow
Notes:
This song is about love and death. Also thought to be partially about Jeff's departure from New York for California, leaving Rebecca Moore at the airport.

'This is a song called Grace, and one day I was cleaning up my room and I was thinking that uh... a usual obsession of death and dying, and there comes a point where you really don't care. 'Cause there's someone.' -- Jeff Buckley (St. Ann's Church, New York, USA, 1992-03-13)

'It's a song about my death, but not fearing it.' -- Jeff Buckley (Interview, 1994)

'Shit's happening now. It's all about now, now now now. Bigger, faster, sweatier, skinnier, whiter, blacker, gracer.' -- Jeff Buckley (Metro, Chicago, USA, 1995-05-13)

"I'd love to sing with Jeff Buckley, Tim Buckley's son. He is currently making his first album, and if it's anything like a radio session I heard by him, it should be amazing. He's written this song called 'Grace', which literally makes the hair on my neck stand on end. I was sweating like a fucking June bride when I first heard him. Music has never done that to me before." -- Liz Fraser (Melody Maker, UK, November 1993)

"I assembled two instrumentals and I gave them the titles – ‘Rise Up to Be’ and the other one was called ‘And You Will’. They were both little titles to encourage Jeff to join me in New York – “And you will become the rock star of your dreams. Rise up to be and join me in this band.” It was also a message to myself, too. So I sent them on a cassette, he got them and said, “Great, I’m working on them”. Then he came to New York soon after and he was in town working on a band doing the songs from the film, The Commitments. He was playing parties to promote that movie. He stopped over at my apartment and said, “You know that song ‘Rise Up
To Be’? Now it’s called ‘Grace’.” He whipped out this book that he carried around with him, one of those blank artistic notebooks with a black cover and it had unlined paper. He had all his dreams written down and poetic imagery, lyrics he’d written, poems and little doodle sketches. He sat on my sofa and said, “Okay, start playing”. I have a tape of this. I started the riff that started ‘Grace’. These are my riffs and the harmonic structure of these things are mine. So, he started to sing: “There’s a moon asking to stay, long enough for the clouds to fly me away.” I’m like, “Wow”. He stopped and said, “I want you to repeat that section because I have some lyrics here and it sounds like a verse.” Repeat that section was the only modification he made on this instrumental I’d given him. ‘Mojo Pin’ was the same thing. He had different lyrics for that, which he then refined." -- Gary Lucas, Interview with Christopher Hollow in 'Rhythms' Magazine,September/October 2015
